Materials

FSC certified lumber - fly ash concrete - formaldehyde free, recycled content insulation – low VOC paint

Sustainable materials may be chosen by three criteria: environmentally preferable products (EPP), low emissions products, and locally produced products.

The EPP category includes wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), reclaimed products, and materials containing certain levels of recycled materials. Low emissions products fall within strict volatile organic compound or VOC guidelines. Locally produced building products must contain raw materials and be manufactured within a 500 mile radius from the project.


Lumber

The FSC sets the most stringent and transparent of the forestry certification standards. Lumber that bears the FSC label can be traced to sustainably managed forests. By using lumber products that have this certification, the consumer can be sure that the source forests will be there for future generations and protected from clear cutting.


Concrete

Coal fly ash is a waste product of coal-fired power plants, which can be used as a substitute for some of the Portland cement in a concrete mixture. In addition to the benefit of CO2 reduction and the recycling of a waste product, fly ash significantly reduces the amount of water needed to achieve a workable concrete mixture. Studies have also shown that the addition of fly ash can significantly increase the strength and durability of cured concrete.


Insulation

Insulation should be chosen for the following characteristics: reduced off-gassing of formaldehyde (provides improved indoor air quality), post-consumer recycled content, non-ozone depleting blowing agents, pre-consumer waste content, and of course for its ability to insulate.
